@nerfguns25 50 cal rounds are rarely ever used on anything except from armour plated vehicles or buildings. They are not fired at a person usually. ohh and dont believe the shit you see in COD!

@TheLeprechuan that’s how single plate works too, but when you hit a single plate the impact wave can propagate more easily through the continuous material than in split discs since the impact energy doesn’t have to cross voids. In fact by splitting the armor into components you are directionalizing the impact because you’re focusing it on a smaller target area which lowers the ability to transmit shock waves out for the afore mentioned reasons.
@asbestoslessener Because it wouldn’t be simple spider silk. There would be other layers to take the impact, but it would make for a light weight and flexible armor, yet just as strong, if not stronger. The way the armor is designed, takes the force, and evenly distributes it through each “scale” drawing the force out across the armor, rather then letting all of the impact be directed in one spot.
Good armor has to have a balance between resistance, shock absorption, flexibility, and weight.
@TheLeprechuan and how can it possibly distribute energy more effectively than a continuous plate considering the impedance caused by gaps between discs? And why is everyone so obsessed with spider silk, soft armor will never defeat a rifle round and spider silk has 25% elongation to failure meaning the bullet will be inside you before the fiber stops it vs kevlar which is 3.4% at failure.
@hedus42 If you pay attention to the video, they also state that the armor is designed to evenly distribute the force of impact, reducing the damage caused by a weapons “punch”. Basically, It can take almost anything you fire at it, and you feel a lot less under it then you would in most body armor. Not to mention how light weight it is. Next, There will be spider silk armor which is simply amazing. Material as thin and light weight as silk, yet able to take a bullet.
